Giving the Gift of Independence by: Student Journalist

The Surfers Sunrise – Rotary Wheelchair Project has built and delivered 80,000 wheelchairs to over 30 developing nations, for free.

The community project that operates from a humble shed in Ashmore on the Gold Coast, has also built two schools and an orphanage.

One more school will be built with the help of local High School in Helensvale at the end of this year.

The innovative project uses old bikes to create robust, low maintenance wheelchairs that can stand up to the challenges they will face in the countries they’re delivered to.

The Wheelchair Project’s purpose is to deliver independence to where it’s needed.
